Possible steps.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Framing<\/strong>.\u00a0What is your issue?\u00a0Why do you want it to be different?\u00a0Set out why this is where your energy is, why this is a learning edge for you (where am I in this).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Aspiration<\/strong>.\u00a0What would you like to be different?\u00a0What is your aspiration in relation to what you have framed? An aspiration is something you can hold lightly, ready to change it if needs be.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Reflection<\/strong>. Reflect on the issue. What questions are arising?\u00a0What is the central question \u2013 the one where the edge really makes itself known?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Moving from question to action<\/strong>. Give some shape to your question, then try to reverse it (how would it be if I was to experience the opposite of what my questions <\/span>is<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"> asking). This might suggest an action to take to find an answer. A possible clue is to say, \u201cHow do I act in the world if I say I am\u2026.\u201d (see example below)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Act in the world<\/strong>. This is the essential part of Action Experiment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Notice<\/strong>\u2013 effect on you, effect on others, the effect on the system. (Things may happen \u2018over there\u2019, at the edges)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Record your noticing<\/strong>(inner (what happens inside you) and outer (what happens outside you)), comparing desired with actual frames, actions, outcomes. Explore new frames, new questions, new action<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Begin another cycle<\/strong>. Continue until it seems appropriate to desist.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Frame: tongue-tied in meetings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Aspiration: Become a confident participant in any meeting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Question after reflection: Why do I assume others know the answers?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Bridging question: How do I act in the world if I assume others may not know the answer?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Action: Deliberately question x by asking how he knows y? (Frame first?)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Notice effect and record this.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Try another one.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong> Am I involved in an Action Experiment?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cAll life is an experiment. (or, are we working differently?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">An Action Experiment is a way of being, and is likely to involve some or all of these:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Being as inquisitive and curious as I can be<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Trying to notice my own stance and how it might get in the way<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Trying to start conversations, hearing as many points of view as possible, rather than trying to persuade people<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Trying to notice my (and other people\u2019s) assumptions and check them out<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Trying to make as many connections as I can with and between others<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Accepting that there is no right answer \u2013 I am learning by doing, letting go of the need to be right<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Suggestions:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Start small.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Start where you feel energised, interested, \u2018edgy\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Keep your overall aspiration simple \u2013 not trying to change the world (at least not straight away!). Your aspiration may change as the experiment unfolds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Start alone or with one or two others.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Prepare the ground \u2013 it may take time to open\u00a0people up to the possibilities, or even to the idea of experimenting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Work through cycles of action and reflection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Enrol others as appropriate, as you go through these cycles and as you gain confidence. Be ready to shift from \u2018my\u2019 experiment to \u2018our\u2019 experiment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Work with those who share your purpose, find friends \u2013 how to deal with those outside the group is one of the questions that may need to be answered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Work through conversation and relationship.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Try to be in experimental mode, curious, learning, open to what emerges.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Answer your questions through action \u2013 by acting in the world (which is not the same as just thinking about it).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Notice what happens. (Noticing is not judging.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Notice what effect your actions having on the 'system' and what effect it is having on you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Notice what effect you are having on others and what effect they are having on you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Keep a running record. It helps you and others notice what is going on (small things might matter in creating \/ not creating big changes).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Forgive yourself and others if things are less than easy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Constantly scan \u2013 what is emerging, changing?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">What knowledge exists already and how do we use it? (This might be an early question and action)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">What is happening? Be ready to change<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">What might we build on? What opportunities are there?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Are there some symbolic things happening which disguise deeper issues?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">What tools might we use? What is the flow, are there feedbacks, traps etc?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Notice what emerges and how you respond to it \u2013 inner and outer.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Are you using other ways of knowing \u2013 intuition, feeling, action?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Reflect on this and on what you learn from it. What new questions arise?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">It won\u2019t necessarily be easy!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">If it gets blocked, be prepared to stop and try something different.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Don\u2019t worry if it\u2019s messy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Who are you sharing things with?
