This prevailing worldview is deeply embedded in our\u00a0culture. It assumes we simply take a problem to pieces to find the cause, diagnose it and then fix it \u2013 just like clockwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In Systems Learning we call this a \u2018thing\u2019 view of the world. The assumption is that everything can be measured \u2013 and if it can\u2019t be measured it doesn\u2019t exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">But this worldview is starting to shift and evolve \u2013 taking an intuitive leap, perhaps, to a \u2018relationship\u2019 view of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Complicated or Complex?<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> We all know the world as a highly complex place. At times, beyond complicated, it\u2019s not easily understood. Increasingly, we are needing to adopt different approaches to find solutions to problems on an international, national, community and individual level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">To illustrate this point, think of a jet engine. Now, begin to imagine the inside of the engine with all its circuitry and different parts. Yes, it\u2019s complicated. But as long as it\u2019s working properly, it remains predictable. If it breaks, taking it to pieces to find the cause makes sense \u2013 and most likely there will be one thing wrong and one solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\">But when you look at complex systems \u2013 and add the unpredictability of things like human beings into the mix \u2013 what emerges is much less predictable. When things go wrong, it becomes very difficult, nigh-on impossible, to find a single cause or solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>A different approach<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"> These complex systems, where many outcomes are possible, need a different approach \u2013 a whole system approach, that involves both an inner and outer aspect:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The inner<\/strong> means being open, flexible, inquiring, ready to learn, to change perspective, able to let go of what no longer serves. This often involves a deal of humility and acceptance that the world may be too complex to be fully understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The outer<\/strong> means seeing the system and its characteristics.
